Few GTA cities have the age range Mississauga does. Cooksville and Clarkson have homes going back to the 1960s and 70s. Erin Mills and Meadowvale were largely built out in the 80s and 90s. Newer development continues to fill in gaps across the city today. Every one of those eras came with a different insulation standard — and in every case, “met code at the time” is not the same as “performs well decades later.”
What This Means Practically
Older Mississauga homes, particularly those from the 60s and 70s, were often built with insulation levels that look thin by today’s standards even when nothing has visibly failed. Newer builds get the benefit of better baseline codes, but builder-grade insulation is still a minimum, not an upgrade — and it settles and loses performance over time just like older insulation does.
Why This Summer Exposed the Gap
This year brought some of the hottest stretches Ontario has recorded in decades. Homes near the lake in Mississauga get some moderation from Lake Ontario, but that didn’t stop upper floors in under-insulated homes from running hot well into the evening, forcing air conditioners to work far harder than they should need to.
Signs Worth Checking
- Upstairs rooms that stay warm long after the rest of the house cools down
- Energy bills that climbed noticeably during this summer’s heat
- A home built before the 1990s that’s never had its attic insulation assessed
- Uneven snow melt on the roof or ice buildup along the eaves in winter
Booking Before the Fall Rush
Once the weather turns, insulation contractors across the GTA — Pro Insulation Contracting included — get busy fast, with demand peaking from October through February. Booking a free inspection now means you’re ahead of that queue, and any recommended work gets finished before winter arrives.
Government rebate programs, including the Enbridge Home Renovation Savings program and the Canada Greener Homes Loan, may apply to insulation upgrades depending on your situation. These programs change frequently, so we’ll confirm what’s currently available rather than quote you a stale number.
