Attic Insulation in Mississauga: Finish What the Builder Left and Stay Warmer This Winter

Most Mississauga homes were built in subdivisions, quickly, to the standard of the day. That standard has risen several times since, and insulation settles as it ages. The result is a lot of houses that look fine from the street and still have cold bedrooms, chilly floors and high heating bills.

You do not need a renovation to fix that. You need to finish a handful of jobs that were done to a minimum the first time.

Job 1: Bring the attic insulation up to date

The attic is where an older building standard shows most clearly. Look in from the hatch. If you see joists, the insulation is thin by today’s expectations. Read what your builder left undone in your Mississauga attic, then see our attic insulation service. We top up with cellulose or fibreglass blown-in insulation.

To see where your home falls, try does your home measure up across six decades of construction standards.

Job 2: Seal the holes nobody sealed

Every wire, pipe and light fixture that passes through the ceiling left a gap. Natural Resources Canada’s Roofs and attics guide says attic air leaks can account for substantial heat loss. You cannot see these gaps from below, which is why we wrote the attic insulation problem you cannot see. AeroBarrier seals leaks across the whole house.

Job 3: Open up the eaves

Blown-in insulation that slumps into the soffits blocks ventilation. Baffles hold a clear channel so the roof stays dry.

Job 4: Fix the cold floors

Cold floors usually come from below: an unsealed rim joist, a cantilever, or a room over the garage. Natural Resources Canada notes that basements can lose more heat than a typical attic. See fixing the cold floors builders left behind, our spray foam insulation page, and garage ceiling insulation.

Job 5: Wrap the basement walls

An unfinished basement with bare concrete is a large cold surface. Blanket wrap insulation covers the walls, and 2 lb closed-cell spray foam is the choice where moisture resistance matters.

Job 6: Replace anything that got wet

A bathroom fan that vents into the attic, or a past roof leak, leaves damp and sometimes mouldy insulation behind. See attic mould and insulation removal in Mississauga and our removal service.

Job 7: Do the ten-minute fixes

  • Swap the furnace filter.
  • Pull furniture and rugs off the registers.
  • Replace flattened weatherstripping on exterior doors.

Does it pay?

The U.S. EPA estimates that air sealing and adding insulation in attics, crawl space floors and basements saves an average of 15% on heating and cooling (ENERGY STAR). It is a modelled average for U.S. homes, so take it as a rough indication.

Rebates help with the upfront cost. See our post on the attic insulation rebate in Mississauga and the energy rebate page.
